How to paint outdoor
Using Chalk Paint Outdoors
You can also use Annie Sloan Chalk Paint outside! It adheres well to brick, concrete, terracotta, and (treated) wood. So feel free to paint your plant pots, garden furniture, garden shed, or even stencil your patio tiles!
Keep in mind that Chalk Paint is mainly intended for decorative purposes and is not designed to protect outdoor items. On its own, it has no weatherproof or protective properties. Without a finish, Chalk Paint will naturally weather over time, creating a beautiful rustic effect. Depending on the look you want, you may need to refresh the paint occasionally.
Protecting with Annie Sloan Lacquer
If you want to protect the paint, use the new Annie Sloan Lacquer. This provides a durable, protective finish (including UV protection) and is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. With Lacquer, the colors of your painted outdoor items will stay vibrant for a long time.
For objects not made of wood, such as plastic plant pots or metal decorations, you can also use Annie Sloan Clear Waxfor protection. This also applies to wooden, wicker, or rattan furniture placed under a roof (outside but not exposed to rain or wind).
Drying in the Sun
-
If painting an outdoor item that already has a lacquer finish, lightly sand it to help the paint adhere.
-
Allow the paint to dry thoroughly in the sun — it can withstand a few rain showers even without a finish.
-
If the surface still rubs off after drying, gently wipe it with a damp cloth (not soaking wet, and don’t rub hard).
Important Notes
-
We do not recommend Chalk Paint for teak or other oily/treated wood, although very weathered teak sometimes works. If in doubt, test first.
-
Ensure the surface is completely dry.
-
Do not paint over green algae.
-
Ideally, let the paint dry in full sun to ‘bake’ the color in.
