How to paint your stairs
Painting Stairs with Chalk Paint
It’s also possible to paint stairs with Chalk Paint! But what’s the best way to do it?
TIP: Always test a small area first. Not every type of wood reacts the same way to the paint and lacquer!
Step-by-Step Guide
-
Clean the floor or stairs thoroughly with St. Marc (preferably a few times) and remove all glue residues.
-
Apply the first coat of paint using an oval brush No. 8 or No. 12.
-
Let it dry for 24 hours!
This ensures that no moisture from the paint remains in the wood. If it does, your lacquer may peel prematurely, which you want to avoid. -
Apply a second coat of chalk paint, slightly thinned if desired.
Drying time: 24 hours. -
Mix 2/3 Annie Sloan Lacquer with 1/3 paint. Using a large flat brush, apply this mixture to the stairs.
This creates the first protective layer with the color of your paint. Work quickly and don’t overwork one spot.
Let it dry thoroughly — ideally 24 hours. -
Apply a second coat of lacquer (without paint) to the stairs or floor.
After 24 hours, apply a final coat.
NOTE: The stairs remain vulnerable during the first few weeks — the finish needs to fully cure.
Even though the lacquer is water-based, it cannot handle large amounts of water. You can mop or wipe the stairs with a damp cloth, but do not leave a wet mop or cloth on the surface. Avoid using harsh cleaning products.
